Volkswagen is recalling nearly 72,700 electric cars worldwide after discovering that battery cells in some vehicles do not meet required quality standards. In rare cases, the problem can cause the battery to overheat and potentially start a fire. However, according to Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), no injuries or property damage have been reported in connection with this issue so far.

The recall covers Volkswagen ID.3, ID.4, ID.7 and ID. Buzz models produced between 2022 and 2025, as well as Cupra Born vehicles produced between 2022 and 2024. Around 10,000 vehicles are affected in Germany, and the recall is also being carried out in other countries. The available reports do not specify how many vehicles in Croatia are affected.

The problem stems from manufacturing defects in battery cells supplied by external manufacturers. This does not mean that every affected battery will catch fire, but the manufacturer has identified a genuine risk that should be taken seriously. Until their vehicles have been inspected, owners of affected cars are advised to charge their batteries to no more than 80% of capacity.

Volkswagen will notify owners by letter and provide instructions for having their vehicles checked at a service centre. Technicians will inspect the battery. Depending on the findings, a software update may be enough, while other cases could require further work or the replacement of battery components. Owners should return to charging their batteries fully only after the service centre confirms that the battery is safe.

Owners of the listed models should not assume that every vehicle is defective, but they should not ignore the recall either. If you own one of these cars, contact an authorised service centre or check the manufacturer's official notice to find out whether your vehicle is affected. The model name alone is not enough, as the recall applies only to vehicles made during specific production periods.
